Pro-life group blasts Trudeau administration for implying that women must use contraception and have abortions to become successful

A leading pro-life organization in Canada has strongly criticized the government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau after a senior cabinet minister implied that women must use contraception and accept unrestricted access to abortion to achieve success in life.

In February 2024, the Trudeau administration introduced new federal legislation that would provide universal access to contraception medications and devices, including birth control pills, IUDs, implants and the morning-after pill.

The plan is part of Bill C-64 or “An Act respecting pharmacare,” which aims to give women the freedom to choose if, when and how they plan their families.

In line with this, Randy Boissonnault, the Liberal Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Official Languages, proudly discussed the proposed bill that would ensure the availability of certain contraceptives, including abortifacient pills, at no cost during a heated session of oral questions in the House of Commons on May 24.

“Our government believes in equipping women for success. That is why we are training women in skilled trades. That is why contraceptives will be free under our pharmacare plan. That is why we will defend a woman’s right to choose,” Boissonnault declared. “We support women every step of the way. What are the Conservatives doing to support women? They vote no.”

However, Pete Baklinski, the communications director for Campaign Life Coalition (CLC), a leading pro-life organization in Canada, sharply rebuked Boissonnault’s comments.

“The Canadian Liberal government under Justin Trudeau literally believes that women need to poison their fertility and kill their preborn children to achieve ‘success.’ Women, is this truly your idea of success? Please respond,” Baklinski wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

CLC has been vocal in its opposition to the government’s stance on abortion and contraception. Earlier this May, the organization criticized Trudeau for making Canadians fund “abortifacient pills,” labeling his approach as “wrongheaded” and anti-family.

Canadian government continues to support abortion and contraception despite proof of adverse effects

The pharmacare legislation was a result of demands by the New Democratic Party (NDP) and its leader, Jagmeet Singh. Singh and his party had made their continued support for the Trudeau government conditional on the introduction of pharmacare legislation before March. The informal coalition between the NDP and the Liberals, established in 2023, is expected to sustain the government until the next scheduled election in 2025.

As a matter of fact, the Deputy Prime Minister from Department of Finance Canada gave an official statement in March regarding their next step to universal access to free contraceptives.

“In the upcoming federal budget, we will be delivering free contraceptives through our national pharmacare plan,” the department wrote on their official website. “As a proudly feminist government, we take freedom of choice seriously. That freedom should not come with a cost. We are a proudly feminist government, and I am proud to be a feminist Finance Minister. We’re a government that believes women should have the right to make their own choices about their health and their bodies. As women’s reproductive rights are challenged in other parts of the world—including just south of the border—it is more important than ever for us to ensure that Canadian women have access to contraception. Today, tomorrow, and the day after that.”

All this, despite mounting evidence of the adverse effects of abortion and contraception. (Related: 19-year-old Canadian girl dies after taking common abortion pill.)
