Doctors have stepped up calls for President Joe Biden to undergo a mental competency test following a report that revealed his cognitive decline.
The report released by Department of Justice (DOJ) Special Counsel Robert Hur on Feb. 8 said the 81-year-old Biden was too senile to be prosecuted for wrongful retention of classified documents. He cited several internal interviews conducted in October that revealed the chief executive struggling to recall basic facts about his own life and career. Biden reportedly “did not remember when he was vice president” and “did not remember, even within several years, when his son Beau died.”
Stuart Fischer, a primary care physician at a nursing home in the Bronx, stressed the need for transparency. He pointed out that Biden’s apparent memory lapses as disclosed in Hur’s report demand a thorough examination to provide clarity on the president’s cognitive abilities.
“Something isn’t right, and even if it’s minor, it must be explained to the public. The horse is out of the barn,” Fischer said. “Not only does [Biden] have an infirmity of some degree, but he has delayed producing objective evidence.” (Related: COVER-UP: White House chief doctor deems Biden fit to work, but omits cognitive test.)
Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-TX), who served as physician to former Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump, has also joined the chorus of medical professionals urging Biden to take a mental competency test.
“He needs an actual cognitive battery of tests, objectively done, put on paper, and briefed to the American people by his physician,” Jackson emphasized. “This guy has cognitive issues related to his age: He shuffles when he walks; he slurs his speech; he forgets where he’s at [and] what he’s doing; he can’t remember names … [and] dates. That is not someone that should be in control of the nuclear codes in this country and controlling our fate overseas.”
But up until now, the 81-year-old chief executive is still projecting himself as fine. He quickly made an appearance at the White House on Feb. 8 to address Hur’s report, albeit he was irritated with the press as he tried to defend his mental state.
“My memory is fine,” Biden lashed out at one reporter. He then turned to another reporter, saying: “My memory is so bad, I let you speak.”
But according to Jackson, Biden’s refusal to submit to a cognitive exam is a real cause for concern. The Texas congressman pointed to the president’s recent confusion of European leaders with their dead predecessors as “super concerning.”
“I’ve been saying since he was candidate Joe Biden: This man does not have the cognitive wherewithal or ability to be our head of state. If you’re too incompetent and too cognitively impaired because of your age to defend yourself from these charges – if he’s charged – then it absolutely, positively goes without saying you should not be the commander-in-chief.”
Former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Dr. Ben Carson, himself a renowned neurosurgeon, also expressed concern about the president’s health. “As someone who knows a thing or two about the human brain, Biden’s mental decline has been obvious for several years,” he told the New York Post. Carson has previously expressed belief that Biden has signs of dementia – given the president’s aggressive demeanor, apparent confusion and issues with his speech.
