Extract from Caesalpinia mimosoides leaves can improve longevity and resistance to oxidative stress

Researchers from China, Germany and Thailand examined the antioxidant activity of Caesalpinia mimosoides extracts using Caenorhabditis elegans as model organism. The results of their study was published in the journal BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

  • C. mimosoides is a vegetable consumed in Thailand that exhibits antioxidant properties in vitro.
  • However, its antioxidant and anti-aging activities in vivo have not yet been explored.
  • To achieve this, the researchers treated C. elegans with varying concentrations of C. mimosoides extracts.
  • Then, they evaluated the protective effects of the C. mimosoides against oxidative stress by using wild-type N2 to determine survival rate under oxidative stress and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS).
  • The researchers also analyzed DAF-16, SOD-3, SKN-1 and GST-4 gene expression using mutant strains (TJ356, CF1553, EU1 and LD4) with GFP reporter genes.
  • They reported that C. mimosoides leaf extracts improved the resistance of C. elegans to oxidative stress and reduced intracellular ROS accumulation.
  • The antioxidant effects of the extracts were mediated through the DAF-16/FOXO pathway and SOD-3 expression.
  • SKN-1 and GST-4, on the other hand, remained unaltered.
  • C. mimosoides leaf extracts also prolonged the lifespan of C. elegans and decreased aging pigments without affecting body length and brood size, indicating low toxicity.

Based on these findings, the researchers concluded that, because of their antioxidant activitiesC. mimosoides leaf extracts can be used as a dietary supplement and alternative medicine for the prevention of oxidative stress and aging.
