In 1951, the administration of President Harry S. Truman began building a massive underground complex that was designed to withstand a nuclear attack from the Soviet Union.
Nicknamed the “underground Pentagon,” the concept behind the Raven Rock Mountain complex was simple: Provide elements of the national government with a facility from which it could continue to operate in a national emergency or major nuclear exchange.
The government, over the years, has built several of these facilities, keeping them updated and well-stocked for the day when they would be needed.
Fortunately, that day has yet to arrive, but currently, the country is dealing with another viral outbreak — Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) — that some health experts believe could eventually morph into something as deadly as the 1918 Spanish flu that killed tens of millions of people.
These government facilities are large, of course, but they’re no where near big enough to accommodate even a fraction of the U.S. population. But then, as the book by Garrett Graff “Raven Rock: The Story of the U.S. Government’s Secret Plan to Save Itself – While the Rest of Us Die,” notes, they were never supposed to.
In the event of a world war involving a nuclear exchange, in which Soviet warheads would no doubt destroy and contaminate much of our country, the vast majority of Americans who survived would be left to fend for themselves.
Meanwhile, government officials would be sequestered underground, either coordinating counterattacks — if any were even possible — or, simply surviving in their well-stocked bunkers.
And that’s exactly the scenario that will play out if coronavirus becomes this century’s Spanish flu.
As SHTFPlan’s Mac Slavo writes, the U.S. government has been stocking supplies to help them survive a pandemic:
These supplies aren’t for saving us, but for saving them. Somewhere, there is a sprawling system of government storage facilities so secret that the American people can’t be told where they are, or what is kept in them.
But it is clear they were (and still are) gearing up for something. These secret facilities are apparently in place to support the logistics of a response to an unprecedented disaster the likes of which no one has ever seen, or perhaps even conceived of in this country.
Slavo cites a June 2016 expose by NPR which provides a glimpse inside a “secret government warehouse” that contains supplies to deal with “health catastrophes.” (Related: Here’s how Trump can end the coronavirus epidemic in just 30 days… (Hint: You won’t like it, and our republic may not survive.)
At the time, NPR interviewed Greg Burel, director of a program known as the Strategic National Stockpile at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. According to the SNS webpage, it is “the nation’s largest supply of potentially life-saving pharmaceuticals and medical supplies for use in a public health emergency severe enough to cause local supplies to run out.”
Burel said there is a reason why the warehouses and what they contain are secret and it makes perfect sense: National security.
“If everybody knows exactly what we have, then you know exactly what you can do to us that we can’t fix,” says Burel. “And we just don’t want that to happen.”
Fair enough. So there are stockpiles of supplies sitting around in huge underground warehouses — we don’t know how many — all around the country — though we don’t know where.
But what happens to We the People if coronavirus gets completely out of hand? Who’s going to save us? The answer: No one.
“Part of what makes these plans so interesting is thinking through … this idea of what you’re going to save for America,” Graff told NPR in a separate story.
“If you’re trying to preserve and restart the government after an attack, [it] becomes this very existential question about what is America? Are you trying to preserve the presidency? Are you preserving the three branches of government? Or are you preserving even the historical totems that have bound us together across generations as Americans?” he said.
Replace the word “attack” with “pandemic” and there you go.
