Eat soy for stronger bones

A new study from the UK suggests that soy may be very beneficial for women over 50. In fact, enough consumption of soy could actually prevent bone loss and reduce the risks of developing osteoporosis.

As women enter menopause, they experience a drop in estrogen, a hormone that helps protect bones.

The study followed 200 women in early menopause. They were given either a soy protein supplement with 66mg of soy isoflavones, or one that contained only the soy protein. Researchers then monitored the levels of two proteins in their blood that could lead toward the onset of osteoporosis. The study found that women who consumed the soy protein with isoflavones had reduced levels of one of the proteins in their bloodstream, making them less likely to develop bone loss. Researchers noted that their risks for heart disease went down, as well. The test subjects who received only soy protein, on the other hand, exhibited no significant changes to their health.

In conclusion, researchers say that the effects of the isoflavones in soy actually mimic those found in conventional drug therapies. Though more research still needs to be done, things definitely look quite promising for soy.
