Princeton political scientist Frances Lee noted that while most Americans may wish to move past the pandemic, “there are constituencies” who feel aggrieved and demand answers. “Most people don’t want to think about this topic, but nevertheless there are constituencies – so Congress is speaking to those constituencies.”

Michael Osterholm, an epidemiologist at the University of Minnesota, warned that the current approach offers little constructive value. “A review of revisionist history will accomplish nothing. We won’t be any better prepared for the next pandemic,” he said, missing the concept of accountability to protect basic freedoms entirely.

Whether the Justice Department acts on Paul’s request remains uncertain, but the political battle over COVID’s legacy has clearly entered a new and consequential phase.
