In a stark revelation that questions the core integrity of artificial intelligence (AI), a new study from Brown University has found that AI chatbots systematically violate established mental health ethics – posing a profound risk to vulnerable individuals seeking help.

The research was conducted by computer scientists in collaboration with mental health practitioners. It exposed how these large language models, even when specifically instructed to act as therapists, fail in critical situations, reinforce negative beliefs and offer a dangerously deceptive facade of empathy.

The study’s lead author, Zainab Iftikhar, focused on how “prompts” – instructions given to an AI to guide its behavior – affect its performance in mental health scenarios. Users often command these systems to “act as a cognitive behavioral therapist” or use other evidence-based techniques.

However, the study confirms that the AI is merely generating responses based on patterns in its training data, not applying genuine therapeutic understanding. This creates a fundamental disconnect between what the user believes is happening and the reality of interacting with a sophisticated autocomplete system.

This groundbreaking research arrives at a pivotal moment in technological history, as millions turn to easily accessible AI platforms like ChatGPT for guidance on deeply personal and complex psychological issues. The findings challenge the aggressive, unchecked promotion of AI integration into every facet of modern life and raise urgent questions about the unregulated algorithms that are increasingly substituting for human judgment and compassion.

From helpful to harmful: How chatbots fail in crises

Iftikhar and her colleagues found in their research that chatbots ignore individual lived experiences, offering generic, one-size-fits-all advice that may be entirely inappropriate. This is compounded by poor therapeutic collaboration, where the AI dominates conversations and can even reinforce a user’s false or harmful beliefs.

Perhaps the most insidious violation is what researchers dubbed deceptive empathy. The chatbots are programmed to use phrases like “I understand” or “I see you,” manufacturing a false sense of connection and care that they are incapable of truly feeling. This digital manipulation preys on human emotion without the substance of human compassion.

“Deceptive empathy is the calculated use of language that mimics care and understanding to manipulate others,” BrightU.AI‘s Enoch engine explains. “It is not genuine emotional concern, but a strategic tool to build false trust and achieve a hidden objective. This makes it a form of deceptive communication that weaponizes the appearance of empathy.”

Furthermore, the study found that these systems exhibit unfair discrimination – displaying discernible gender, cultural and religious biases. This reflects the well-documented problem of bias in the vast, often unvetted datasets on which these models are trained, proving they amplify the very human contradictions and prejudices they were built upon.

Most critically, the AI demonstrated a profound lack of safety and crisis management. In situations involving suicidal ideation or other sensitive topics, the models were found to respond indifferently, deny service or fail to refer users to appropriate, life-saving resources.

Iftikhar notes that while human therapists can also err, they are held accountable by licensing boards and legal frameworks for malpractice. For AI counselors, there is no such accountability. They operate in a regulatory vacuum, leaving victims with no recourse.

This absence of oversight echoes a broader societal trend where powerful technology corporations, shielded by legal loopholes and a narrative of progress, are permitted to deploy systems with known, serious flaws. The push for AI integration – from classrooms to therapy sessions – often outpaces humanity’s understanding of the consequences, prioritizing convenience over human well-being.
