The root causes of autism could be identified as early as March 2026, according to Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is spearheading a sweeping federal research initiative. Kennedy – appointed by President Donald Trump to lead the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) Commission – initially promised answers by September.
The secretary’s revised projection came during an interview with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, where he acknowledged that while preliminary data may emerge by September, definitive conclusions will require additional research. The delay stems from ongoing replication studies – re-examinations of past research – as well as new investigations by 15 scientific teams. Grants for these studies will be awarded within weeks, with results expected in early 2025. (Related: HHS secretary Robert F. With autism rates soaring to 1 in 31 children, parents and policymakers are demanding clarity. But critics question whether Kennedy’s timeline is realistic, noting that it undermines public confidence.
Just months ago, he boldly claimed the cause of autism would be uncovered by September – framing it as a solvable crisis. Now, the goalposts have moved.
Autism spectrum disorder has become one of the most pressing public health challenges in America. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), diagnoses have surged over the past two decades, with 1 in 31 children now affected—a staggering increase from 1 in 150 in 2000.
Kennedy has repeatedly suggested environmental factors such as toxins in food, vaccines or medications are driving the uptick. While he has not provided conclusive evidence, his commission’s recent report highlights concerns over ultra-processed foods, chemical exposures and pharmaceutical safety.
The second Trump administration established the MAHA Commission in February, tasking it with investigating chronic childhood illnesses, including autism. Its report outlines ten recommendations, such as long-term nutritional studies, enhanced vaccine safety monitoring, and scrutiny of FDA-approved food additives.
Kennedy’s approach aligns with conservative skepticism of federal health agencies, particularly regarding vaccine policies. His insistence on replicating past studies suggests distrust of existing research – a stance that has drawn both support and backlash from the scientific community.
Many researchers caution against premature conclusions. Autism is a complex condition with genetic, environmental, and neurological factors. While Kennedy emphasizes environmental toxins, mainstream science maintains that no single cause has been proven.
Some experts worry that Kennedy’s rhetoric could politicize the issue, leading to policy changes based on incomplete data. Others applaud his push for transparency, arguing that past CDC and Food and Drug Administration oversight has been insufficient.
The health secretary’s mission to uncover autism’s root causes is one of the most ambitious and controversial health initiatives in recent memory. The stakes are high: If definitive links are found, federal health policies from food regulations to vaccine mandates could face major overhauls. With billions in research funding, a skeptical scientific establishment and a nation desperate for answers, the coming months will test whether the MAHA Commission can deliver on its bold promises.
