King Charles III diagnosed with enlarged prostate, hospital treatment starts soon

King Charles III of the U.K. has been diagnosed with an enlarged prostate, and has been scheduled to visit a hospital to begin treatment soon.

Aides said the king’s condition was mild and he is already scheduled for restorative surgery. All of his engagements and meetings have been suspended so that the king can more easily recover.

It is presumed he is residing at his private home, Birkhall, on the Balmoral estate where he received the diagnosis on Wednesday, Jan. 17.

While the degree of detail on Charles’ health is unusual, royal sources stated that he was ready to share the details of his diagnosis to encourage other men who may be experiencing symptoms to get checked, following public health advice.

It comes after Kensington Palace independently said the Princess of Wales was being treated in a hospital after going through a successful abdominal surgery.

Charles had several meetings and events scheduled at Dumfries House in Ayrshire this week, which have now been put off on doctor’s advice. (Related: King Charles announces TOTAL BAN on cigarette smoking in UK – is it because the nicotine in tobacco helps protect against COVID?)

“In common with thousands of men each year, the King has sought treatment for an enlarged prostate. His Majesty’s condition is benign, and he will attend hospital next week for a corrective procedure. The King’s public engagements will be postponed for a short period of recuperation,” a Buckingham Palace spokesman said on Wednesday afternoon.

The 75-year-old monarch assumed the throne in September 2022 after spending 70 years as the heir to the throne and was crowned last May in Westminster Abbey.

Princess Catherine also dealing with surgery

Concerning Princess Catherine, she was admitted to The London Clinic in Marylebone on Tuesday, Jan. 16, for the planned procedure and is likely to stay in the hospital for 10 to 14 days.

Kensington Palace said the 42-year-old future queen will then return home to Windsor to continue her recovery with the assistance of her family.

The palace did not confirm what Kate was being treated for but confirmed that the condition was not cancerous. The princess is expected to be advised to recover for two to three months, and her return to official duties will be based on medical advice closer to the time.

Kate is not likely to return to public events until after Easter, and her husband Prince William is expected to be by his wife’s and children’s side throughout that time.

“The Princess of Wales appreciates the interest this statement will generate. She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible, and her wish that her personal medical information remains private,” a statement from Kensington Palace said.

Based on reports, the princess was not rushed to the hospital and her condition was not something that developed over the weekend.

William will not engage in official obligations while his wife is in the hospital. Royal aides will furnish an amended schedule for William in due time.
