How to make a healing essential oil remedy for minor cuts and scrapes

Some essential oils possess potent antibacterial properties. When used correctly, they can help in disinfecting minor wounds and injuries. The therapeutic qualities of certain essential oils may even accelerate your body’s natural healing process. The best part is that you can easily carry your own healing essential oil remedy anywhere you go by keeping it in a small, convenient bottle. Now, you can treat minor cuts and scrapes wherever you are by making your own healing essential oil blend.

Ingredients for DIY healing essential oil blend

The specific essential oils chosen for this blend each have unique healing properties that can work together to fight bacterial infection and promote the growth of new skin tissue to hasten wound recovery. To make your own healing essential oil remedy, you will need these ingredients:

  • Lavender essential oil: Lavender is well-known for its soothing and calming properties, which is why people have used historically used this essential oil to treat wounds, burns, cuts, stings, and other various skin issues. Its antibacterial, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory effects allow it to clean wounds and protect them from infection. (Related: Here are the best essential oils for improved physical and mental health.)
  • Oregano essential oil: Few essential oils can match the potency and versatility of oregano essential oil. It can be used to treat respiratory issues, gastrointestinal disorders, headaches, allergies and heart conditions. In ancient times, Greek physicians treated wounds and bug bites with oregano oil. However, caution must be taken when applying oregano oil topically. As a “hot oil,” it may burn your skin if it is not properly diluted in a carrier oil.
  • Melaleuca essential oil: Also known as tea tree oil, melaleuca essential oil has powerful antibacterial and antiviral properties to help your body fight off bacteria, viruses, and other sources of infection.
  • Non-alcohol witch hazel solution: You can use a witch hazel astringent solution as a base for your healing oil blend due to its natural soothing and moisturizing properties. Since alcohol is a skin irritant, it is best to use a non-alcohol version of the witch hazel solution, otherwise the alcohol might cancel out the witch hazel’s soothing capabilities. Witch hazel also has anti-inflammatory qualities that can reduce swelling.

Once you have gathered all of these ingredients, you can create your own DIY healing essential oil remedy by mixing together 20 drops of lavender oil, 10 drops of oregano oil, and 20 drops of melaleuca oil in an empty 10 ml glass roller bottle. Fill the rest of the bottle with the non-alcohol witch hazel solution, and give the mixture a good shake. This should create a 25-percent dilution formula, but you can adjust the amounts based on your personal preference. Feel free to experiment and add other essential oils that you think might be compatible with this blend. You can even use fractionated coconut oil as a substitute carrier oil for witch hazel.

How to use your healing essential oil blend

To use your essential oil blend, you can experiment with the different application methods to find out what works best for you.

  • In a glass roller bottle. Use the roller bottle to apply the mixture liberally to the affected area the same way you would apply an antiseptic ointment. For small wounds, bug bites, and blemishes, use the essential oil blend to reduce inflammation and promote recovery time.
  • In a spray bottle. A spray bottle can allow you to apply the essential oil blend to a larger area, while making less physical contact with your skin. If you want to fill a two-ounce spray bottle with the mixture, you need to use three times the amount of each essential oil. Fill the rest of the bottle with the witch hazel solution to create a 12.5 percent dilution formula.
