Dog-rose shows potential as natural remedy for diabetes


A study by researchers from the High School of Sciences and Technology of Health of Tunis and the National Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology of Tunis found a potential cure for diabetes in dog-rose (Rosa canina). This finding, which was published in the African Journal of Traditional, Complementary and Alternative Medicines, was based on the results of in vitro experiments.

  • Dog-rose is widely used in folk confectionery and as a traditional remedy for the common cold, flu, gastrointestinal disorders, infections, hemorrhoids. and diabetes.
  • Previous studies have shown that that dog-rose exhibits anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity, and anti-diabetic properties that can be attributed to its phytochemical content. Some of the compounds present in dog-rose include vitamin C, tocopherols, carotenoids, phenolic compounds, organic acids, sugars, and essential fatty acids.
  • In this study, the researchers collected extracts from dried fruits and flowers from the dog-rose plant and evaluated their total phenolic and flavonoid content. They then proceeded to determine the antioxidant and antidiabetic properties of the extracts.
  • To determine antioxidant activity, the team used free radical scavenging and ferric reducing power assays. Meanwhile, they based antidiabetic potential on the extract’s ability to inhibit alpha-amylase activity.
  • The results of the study showed that dog-rose extracts are rich in phenolic compounds and flavonoids that are known for their antioxidant activity. Moreover, the extracts displayed potent alpha-amylase inhibitory activity.

From these results, the researchers concluded that dog-rose has potential use as a natural remedy for diabetes due to its potent antioxidant and alpha-amylase inhibitory activities.
