The medicinal use of vitamin D and zinc for treating psoriasis

Researchers from Al-Furat Al-Awsat University in Iraq have found that people who suffer from psoriasis have significantly lower levels of vitamin D and zinc. In their study, published in the Australian Journal of Basic and Applied Sciences, they looked at the mechanisms that contribute to the lack of the two nutrients, as well as its subsequent effect on the patients.

  • Vitamin D is known for its immunomodulatory effects in psoriasis, while the trace element zinc is associated with immune system health.
  • The team measured vitamin D and zinc serum levels from patients with psoriasis.
  • Based on the findings, those with psoriasis had lower levels of serum vitamin D and zinc than those in the control group.

The team concluded that psoriasis can cause significant reductions in vitamin D and zinc levels.
