Healing acupressure points for toothaches

Toothaches are common health problems that should not be ignored. They might not be life-threatening, but they will likely only get worse if left untreated. They may even be signs of some other, more serious, underlying condition. Some people may use painkillers or antibiotics to cure aching teeth, but they are better treated with natural remedies that have no unwanted side effects. Acupressure is one of the many natural remedies that can help treat toothaches.

If you are suffering from a toothache, you may experience accompanying symptoms, such as fever, tenderness and inflammation in or around the area or your gum or tooth, painful sensitivity to hot or cold foods and drinks, and sharp pain when you bite down on anything. Tooth decay is one of the most common causes of toothaches. You can prevent this with proper oral hygiene and dental care, such as brushing your teeth regularly and flossing. However, if you already have a toothache, acupressure can help to bring relief to your aching tooth, as well as numerous other common body ailments. (Related: Pain relief with acupressure: Relieving 10 common body aches and pains.)

Acupressure points for treating toothaches

To maximize the health benefits of acupressure, it should be accompanied by good oral hygiene. Here are some of the best acupressure points for relieving painful teeth:

  • Small Intestine 18. One of the most important acupressure points for relieving toothache, this point is also called the Cheek Bone Hole. You can find this spot at the lower edge of your cheekbone, directly below the outer corner of your eye and across the lower edge of your nose. Once you have found it, stimulate this point by using your index and middle fingers to apply firm and steady pressure to both sides of your face. Hold the pressure for one minute while breathing deeply. This can help with the treatment of toothaches, swelling of the jaw, facial paralysis and facial muscle spasms.
  • Large Intestine 4. One of the most popular acupressure points for treating all manner of chronic pain, this point is also known as the Joining Valley or Union Valley. It is the ultimate solution for quick pain relief. Locate this spot on the highest point of the fleshy webbing in between your thumb and index finger when they are brought together. Stimulating this point on both hands can also boost your immune system.
  • Stomach 6. Also known as the Jaw Chariot, this is another significant acupressure point for quick pain relief to aching teeth. Stimulating this point properly can be as effective as formal medicine for alleviating toothaches. As the name implies, you can find the Jaw Chariot point riding between the middle of your upper and lower jaws. If you clench your back teeth, you should feel a muscle bulge out in front of your earlobe. Once you have located your Jaw Chariot spots on both sides of your face, use your thumbs to apply steady and firm pressure on these points for one minute. This point is useful in treating jaw pain, crooked mouth, spasms, lockjaw, toothaches in the lower jaw, and swelling of the cheek.
  • Triple Warmer 13. This point is called the Shoulder Meeting Point and is a vital pressure point for eliminating tooth pain naturally. You can find this point on the outer side of your upper arm. It is just one thumb width behind the base of your upper arm and two finger widths up towards your shoulder. You can use your fingers to apply steady pressure to the outside of your upper arm for one minute while breathing deeply, then repeat the process on the other arm. You can also hold the pressure until the pain and tenderness subside.
