Rheumatoid arthritis is an incurable disease, but it can be managed with the right intervention. According to a study, one of the most effective medications for rheumatoid arthritis is used in traditional Chinese medicine. It’s so effective that it works better than prescription drugs in treating the disease.
Previous inquiries have looked into the ability of GuiZhi-ShaoYao-ZhiMu decoction (GSZD) to treat rheumatoid arthritis, but these studies have yet to be systematically evaluated. The researchers, therefore, decided to review the traditional medication’s efficacy based on past clinical trials involving it.
They were able to gather 13 randomized clinical trials that fit their criteria. They found that although most of the studies added herbs to the basic GSZD formulation, the resulting drug was still three to six times more effective than the placebo used. Moreover, only two of the studies reported any adverse outcome from taking GSZD – more studies reported side effects from the control groups that did not take GSZD.
With their findings, the researchers concluded that GSZD might be as effective as – if not more effective than – Western drugs in treating rheumatoid arthritis without causing any significant side effect. They recommended further studies using a more significant patient group and a long-term scope to establish the medication’s efficacy and safety.
The study was published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.
Relieving the discomfort brought about by rheumatoid arthritis doesn’t have to involve pain medications immediately, what with their potential side effects. Instead, sufferers can follow these tips to naturally bid the pain goodbye:
Although rheumatoid arthritis affects the joints, stretching the muscles around the affected area can help reduce pain. A study found that even simple stretches can help alleviate arthritic pain in the wrists and hands.
Resting the body can help with managing pain. However, it’s important to arrive at a balance between taking temporary breaks and settling into a sedentary lifestyle – the latter makes the pain worse.
Whether one should apply hot or cold compress on the sore spot is a matter of debate as different temperatures may work differently on everyone. What’s more important is to remember never to apply ice directly on the skin – wrap it in a towel or cloth before application.
Physical and emotional stress can take a toll in the form of arthritic pain. Natural methods of stress relief, such as tai chi, meditation, yoga, or a plain massage can help.
Working out has a pain-relieving effect. Specific exercises targeting certain muscle groups or body parts can be a big help. Recommended exercises for people with rheumatoid arthritis include swimming and cycling.
Inflammation plays a crucial role in arthritic pain. One of the best ways to prevent or control it is by eating the right food. Here are some of the best foods for managing rheumatoid arthritis:
