Adlay tea can be used to prevent influenza

Adlay millet is a medicinal plant associated with plenty of health benefits. A study published in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture investigated the ability of tea made from adlay to inhibit the influenza virus and treat the flu.

  • The researchers tested adlay tea at a concentration suitable for drinking against various influenza strains.
  • They found that adlay tea had antiviral properties against the influenza A/PR/8/34 virus. It also inhibited the multiplication of the H1N1, H3N2, and B types of influenza virus, including strains that have developed a resistance to oseltamivir.
  • Adlay tea was observed to prevent influenza infection as the virus was adsorbed to the cell, as well during the virus replication process. This prevented the virus from binding to the Malin Darby canine kidney cells used in the experiment, although it did not suppress hemagglutination inhibition or cell fusion.
  • The researchers believe that although adlay tea contains plenty of polyphenols, its antiviral effect involves other currently unknown compounds whose influence is strong enough to disrupt and inhibit the viral replication process.

The researchers concluded that adlay tea can indeed help treat the flu, although its exact mechanism needs to be studied further to be defined.
