The Parrotiopsis jacquemontiana (Decne) Rehder holds strong antimicrobial potential

Parrotiopsis jacquemontiana (Decne) Rehder is a plant found in Pakistan that is traditionally used for treating wounds and skin infections. A group of researchers from Quaid-i-Azam University in Pakistan have shown that the leaves of P. jacquemontiana have potent antibacterial and antifungal potential. Their study, which was published in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine, looked at the effects of leaf extracts on clinical multi-drug resistant bacterial strains.

  • Bacterial infections cause 70 percent of deaths associated with infectious diseases. Unfortunately, antibiotics that work against harmful bacteria are slowly losing their effectiveness due to multiple drug resistance.
  • P. jacquemontiana leaves, as well as their stem extracts, have been used to treat skin infections. However, there is no published data regarding its biological activities.
  • Methanolic extracts and subsequent fractions from P. jacquemontiana leaves were tested against 19 bacterial strains and eight fungal strains to determine their minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal/fungicidal concentration (MBC/MFC).
  • The different phytochemicals in P. jacquemontiana leaves were also determined.

Results of the study show that inhibition of the different bacterial and fungal strains can be observed even with low doses of P. jacquemontiana leaf extracts. This shows that P. jacquemontiana  has strong antibacterial and antifungal activity. In addition to this many phytochemicals were also identified in the extracts, which could be attributed for these biological activities.
