The therapeutic potential of rosemary

Researchers from Pars Bioscience Research Center and the University of Kansas-City Missouri have shown that rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) has many different therapeutic applications. This meta-analysis, published in Herbal Medicine, collated information from various articles to evaluate the preservative and therapeutic potential of rosemary.

  • The team gathered research articles from various public databases using the search words “Rosmarinus officinalis,” “R. officinalis,” and “rosemary.” Over 80 articles were identified and incorporated into the review.
  • They then reviewed, summarized, and organized these articles based on their topic.
  • Rosemary exhibits antioxidant, antimicrobial, anticancer, anti-diabetic, antidepressant, neuro-protective, anti-inflammatory, and anti-obesity activities.
  • It also contains several biologically active compounds, such as phenolic compounds that are strong antioxidants.
  • Studies showed that rosemary has low toxicity levels and can cause few side effects.

From the information that they were able to collect, researchers concluded that rosemary can be used as a food preservative since it exhibits antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant activities, as well as, low toxicity levels. Aside from this, it can also be used to treat different diseases since it contains high levels of antioxidants that are important for antidiabetic and anticancer mechanisms.
