A recent report by the Environmental Health Trust revealed that popular mobile phone brands emit radiation that is about three times higher than the manufacturer’s previously reported radiation levels, of which Samsung, Apple, Motorola, and Nokia are the main suspects. In line with this, the French Agence Nationale Des Frequences has issued a list of mobile phones — including details of make, model, and test results for each mobile phone assessed — that have higher than expected radiation emission.
French physician and prominent radiation testing expert Dr. Marc Arazi expressed concerns regarding the contents of the report. According to the physician, most mobile phones are handled very close to the body – in places like women’s bras, men’s trouser pants pockets, and even belts.
“As a physician, I am deeply concerned about what this means for our health and especially the health of our children. People have a right to know that when cell phones are tested in ways people commonly use phones – such as in direct contact with their body – the values exceed current regulatory limits. This is a first victory for transparency in this industry scandal,”Dr. Arazi was quoted as saying in NaturalBlaze.com.
An animal study carried out by researchers at the National Institutes of Health‘s National Toxicology Program showed that exposure to high levels of mobile phone radiation may increase the risk of developing brain and heart cancer. As part of the study, the research team exposed rodents to carefully calibrated radio-frequency (RF) radiation levels for about nine hours a day for two years. The results showed that rats exposed to relatively high RF levels developed rare forms of brain and heart cancer compared with their non-exposed counterparts. The team also found that the increased incidence of brain and heart cancer coincided with higher RF exposure, indicating a causal relationship between the conditions.
“This is by far — far and away — the most carefully done cell phone bioassay, a biological assessment. This is a classic study that is done for trying to understand cancers in humans. There will have to be a lot of work after this to assess if it causes problems in humans, but the fact that you can do it in rats will be a big issue. It actually has me concerned, and I’m an expert,” former NTP head Christopher Portier noted in ScientificAmerican.com.
A meta-analysis published in 2015 also showed that exposure to mobile phone radiation is associated with the onset of certain cancers. The research team cautioned that radiofrequency from mobile phones may damage the DNA, which in turn may accumulate over time and trigger the onset of various adverse conditions including headaches, fatigue, skin conditions, and even cancer. The experts also noted that the duration of radiofrequency exposure may play a role in cancer onset. According to the scientists, using mobile phones for just 20 minutes daily may lead to a threefold increased risk of developing brain tumor. The team also noted that using mobile phones for an hour daily for four years may elevate the risk of tumor development from three to five folds.
“These data are a clear sign of the real risks this kind of radiation poses for human health…[Our] data were obtained on adults who used cell phones mostly up to 10 years as adults. The situation can dramatically differ for children who use cell phones in childhood, when their biology is much more sensitive to hazardous factors, and will use it over the [course of their] life,” study author Igor Yakymenko said in NYDailyNews.com.
