EMF Radiation: How to Protect Your Children

In many ways, tablets, cellphones and other electronic devices are a parent’s best friend. These items can help keep children entertained and out of trouble but the truth is that they really aren’t that safe.

If a device is connected to a WiFi network, that means it is emitting harmful electromagnetic field (EMF) radiation. In fact, one of the most dangerous aspects about laptop use is the associated EMF emission. All computers emit EMFs on varying frequencies and it is widely accepted that the radiation exposure is fairly low-level. However, research conducted in recent years has revealed that even low-level exposures still have the potential to cause serious harm.

Laptops, tablets, cellphones and the like are used in close proximity to the body, meaning that even low-levels of EMF radiation still have the potential to create quite the impact. Due to the way these products are generally used, they are also exceptionally dangerous. EMF radiation may seem like it really can’t be that harmful, but it is linked to numerous health conditions and diseases. For example, EMF radiation can cause cancer, brain tumors, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and multiple sclerosis — and that is just the short list. In May of 2011, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a statement that classified WiFi radiation-type exposure as a potential Class 2B carcinogen.

Dr. Magda Havas, Professor of Environmental & Resource Studies at Trent University in Canada, is a top researcher in the field of EMF radiation and its effects. She has found that WiFi routers can also cause cancer and that there are many other symptoms of exposure to this type of radiation such as cognitive disorders and mood disorders. Dr. Mercola also reports that exposure to EMFs from cellphones and WiFi is making people sick, whether people realize it or not. Headaches, fatigue, insomnia and other aches and pains are some of the more common symptoms that people experience but do not tend to associate with exposure to radiation.

A warning from the Federal Communications Commission Office of Engineering & Technology suggests that computer laptops and other such devices should be kept at least 20 centimeters, or about 8 inches, away from the body while in use. Many studies have also indicated that children are particularly susceptible to the harmful effects of EMF exposure. Here are a few tips on keeping your children safe while using their electronics:

  • Use a laptop that is hardwired into the internet via an Ethernet cable, preferably instead of a tablet
  • Laptops, tablets and other devices should be used on desks or tables, not on laps
  • Limit computer/tablet time to specific times of day
  • Some studies indicate computer use is more harmful at night. Avoid computer use for two hours before bedtime.
  • Implement safe search functions and consider installing parental control software
  • Limit cellphone use and do not allow young children to use them often, if at all.
