Gooseberries may be world’s most powerful berry

When you think of an antioxidant-rich berry, what comes to mind first? Blueberries or goji berries? Perhaps cranberries? All excellent thoughts, but what about gooseberries? New studies have now shown that the exotic Ceylon gooseberry may be a more powerful antioxidant than any other berry.

A team of Brazilian researchers found that gooseberries contain more antioxidants than blueberries or cranberries. Gooseberries’ high levels of phytonutrients make them an extremely powerful nutrient powerhouse. Their antioxidant power makes them great for reducing oxidative damage and for cleansing the body of toxins and harmful free radicals. Antioxidants are also widely regarded for their ability to prevent diseases such as cancer. With so much antioxidant activity in gooseberries, it begs the question — what other beneficial properties might they have?

Ceylon gooseberries are widely used in Brazil; they are sold as jams, drinks and even just as plain fresh fruit. Brazilian researchers also claim that gooseberry skin could be used to create a natural coloring useful in food manufacturing.
